Gals We Admire: Gloria Latham

Gloria Latham

Gloria Latham, Co-owner of Semperviva Yoga, is going to OM-spire you to new heights with her positive attitude and zest for life. And with yoga retreats in both B.C. and Greece, Latham has turned practicing downward dog into an international affair.

Name: Gloria Latham

Profession: Co-owner of Semperviva Yoga and Director of Yoga Teacher Training
Websites: semperviva.com, glorialatham.com
Twitter handle: @SempervivaYoga

Describe your typical work day, from start to finish
6:30am Wake up and do a short yoga flow and meditation
7:00am Check email and prepare for the day
8:00am Kids to school
8:30am Either prepare to teach/meet with team/hit the desk up until 5:00ish
5:00ish Pick up kids from school, soccer, wherever
7:00-10:00pm Teach class and teach Yoga Teacher training
10:30pm onwards Work on my favourite work projects. Good time to think. When the brain gets too tired I love to dive into some good fiction

When you were a kid, what did you want to grow up to be?
That was a long time ago, but I think I wanted to be a lifeguard.

What do you enjoy most about your job?
The students. I think we have the BEST student community ever at Semperviva Yoga, and I love my team. Sharing yoga with people is so rewarding!

What do you find to be the biggest challenge in your profession?
Having the time to do everything I want to do.

Do you believe you had a "calling" for your profession?
Yes. I never intended to have a “yoga business” but I love the practice so much it has turned into my profession. I just want to share it all.

What are the three most important pieces of career advice you would give to other Canadian Career Gals?
Love what you do. I can’t imagine spending 8/10/12 hours of my day doing something I didn’t love. With everything you love there are aspects of your work day that you won’t enjoy... don't shy away from hard work.

Simplify your life. Try to live close to your work so you don’t spend precious hours of your day in long commutes. This time is precious to your friends, family and yourself.

Prioritize your health. Make a commitment to your physical, emotional and mental well-being. This will give you the energy and drive you need to accomplish your goals.

Spend time outdoors and take holidays. As business people we are terrified to step away from our work. Taking a step away from your business gives you a clarity that you don’t have when you are stuck in the day to day grind.

OK... that’s four and I could probably keep going...
