Feeling out of sorts? Here's a tune from R&B powerhouse singer Alicia Keys to remind you of your inner strength. As Keys croons, when things get tough, just think to yourself "even when I'm a mess, I still put on a vest with an S on my chest, oh yes, I'm a Superwoman".

Movie Worth Watching: The Help

We love when books are adapted into films, and we are counting on DreamWorks' version of The Help to be just as riveting as the
#1 New York Times bestselling novel by Kathryn Stockett. Here's a quick synopsis of what the film is about:

The Help
stars Emma Stone (Easy A) as Skeeter, Academy Award–nominated Viola Davis (Doubt) as Aibileen and Octavia Spencer as Minny—three very different, extraordinary women in Mississippi during the 1960s, who build an unlikely friendship around a secret writing project that breaks societal rules and puts them all at risk. From their improbable alliance a remarkable sisterhood emerges, instilling all of them with the courage to transcend the lines that define them, and the realization that sometimes those lines are made to be crossed—even if it means bringing everyone in town face-to-face with the changing times.

Growing Up Too Fast

We read a great article about adolescent girls and the pressures they face in today's society. Katrina Onstad makes some valid points in her article What do teen fashion models say about femininity today? (originally published in The Globe and Mail on Saturday, July 16, 2011), including aknowledging that "girls are sexual, and that playing and experimenting with that new sexuality is a huge part of the transition into adulthood." However, she also argues that young girls need to do this far away from the spotlight if they want to make it through their teenage years "healthy and unscathed". We couldn't agree with Onstad more.

Shop the Socially Responsible Way

women-shopping
We think it's a pretty fair stereotype to say most of us career gals love to shop. But it doesn't mean we can't be socially responsible about it. We recently read How to be a Socially Conscious Consumer by Kate Jongbloed, an enlightening post on the Because I am a Girl blog (originally published on July 8, 2011). As Jongbloed states, "much of the food we eat and clothes we wear was grown or produced in developing countries", making us "connected to girls in the developing world through the purchases we make". If this isn't something you think about when you're shopping, perhaps it's time to become more aware of this important global issue. In her post, Jongbloed also offers six simple tips on how to buy goods that are ethically produced and traded.

Get Your Grill On

Stockholm-GreenPan-Square-Grill-Pan
After a day of work, some of us career gals find it most relaxing (and dare we say, even therapeutic) to get into the kitchen and prepare a good meal. We like getting our grill on with the GreenPan Square Grill Pan from the Stockholm collection, one of our favourite and oft-used cookware items. Don't be fooled by the contemporary and elegant look—beyond its pretty exterior is one serious non-stick pan that performs. This premium quality Belgian pan grills steaks and fish to perfection, and is also great for veggies, or cooking bacon and eggs. Bonus: the pan is made using Thermolon non-stick technology, which lets us cook most meals on low to medium temperatures so we can simultaneously save on our energy bill and help the environment. Talk about a well-thought out piece of cookware!

Deep Sleep Thanks to a Sheep

To keep up with our work and home responsibilities, we working moms need every minute of shut-eye possible. And that can only happen when our little one is comfortably snoozing first. To assist us with this task, we tried out the Cloud B Sleep Sheep, an adorable sound machine that produces four soothing sounds to help baby fall asleep. Choose from a mother’s calming heartbeat, ocean waves, spring showers, or harmonious whale songs, all of which are lulling sounds that will create a tranquil environment for baby to doze off to. This stuffed animal gets our stamp of our approval—don’t be surprised if you’re in baby’s room and wind up falling asleep to the peaceful sounds, too!
