She's described as a selfless leader, a modern thinker, poet, an articulated teacher, and a linguist, but "a kind mother" may be the most meaningful title that Fawzia Koofi goes by.
Koofi is a member of parliament in Afghanistan’s northern Badakhshan province, and has previously worked with UNICEF and various NGOs as a women’s and children’s advocate.
The Globe and Mail article Fawzia Koofi: The face of what Afghanistan could be, published in January 2011, is an excellent account of Koofi's mission.
Interested in hearing her speak live? Koofi is currently on a Canadian tour to promote her memoir Letters to My Daughter, a book in which she tells her remarkable life story and gives her take on Afghan society and Islam.
