We love Canadian funny man Dan Aykroyd for his memorable roles in flicks such as Grosse Point Blank and Trading Places. Plus, who can forget him in classics like Ghostbusters, Dragnet and The Blues Brothers? Well funny enough, this comedic actor/screenwriter isn't just a hit on the silver screen--he's got winemaking skills too! A fellow CCG brought a bottle of Dan Aykroyd Cabernet Merlot VQA wine over as a hostess gift, and though we were initially skeptical of how it would taste, any doubt was erased after our first sip. Our palates were amused and delighted by the hints of green bell pepper as well as layers of fruit and spice. Food pairing recommendations include cabbage rolls with thick tomato sauce or ground beef lasagna. We washed down our barbecue chicken sandwiches with this medium-bodied red and discovered this to also be a good pairing. Mr. Aykroyd, we raise a glass to your comedic wit and your winemaking finesse!

Great wine. You should definitely check out the other Canadian celebrity winemakers like Gretzky and Weir.
ReplyDeleteI actually tried this brand back in Sept 07 when my brother-in-law had a Wine Tasting at his house. Surprisingly, it came out as one of the favourites despite numerous other more expensive competitors. Cheers!
ReplyDeleteI'll have to try this wine out sometime - who knew that green bell peppers & fruity notes were a combination? I'll check my local LCBO for a try!
ReplyDeleteRecently, I saw him on Martha Stewart and he is passionate about his vineyard and takes a very hands-on approach in the whole process... unlike some other celebs who'll put their name on ANYTHING, but will never actually wear their own clothes (ahem, JLo!) or their own shoes (ahem, Jess Simpson!)
ReplyDeleteWe've been invited to a BBQ this weekend at this is the most perfect hostess gift idea! Thanks for the reminder about the wine!
Another wine to add to the "must try" list. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteyeah, i had the gretzky wine, it's a-ight.
ReplyDeleteVery decent wine...like you I was skeptical, but a bottle later I was very happy.
ReplyDeleteBeing a fan of BOTH cabbage rolls(with dollops of sour cream) and lasagna( with lots of parmesan), I am glad this wine goes with both. I'll definitely try it.
