Seriously Funny

There's no doubt that Ellen DeGeneres is one funny gal. In her third and newest book, Seriously...I'm Kidding (Grand Central Publishing), the daytime talk show host muses on her recent career successes including becoming a CoverGirl model and hosting a season of American Idol, as well as shares personal stories and life advice. Ellen's book was a quick read for us and we found ourselves chuckling throughout a lot of it and even laughing out loud. This is a must-read for fans of DeGeneres' hilarious monologues and comic wit. Keep this one on the bedside table—Ellen's humour is good clean fun that'll put a smile on your face before going to sleep.

Sketch-y Times

We're huge fans of board games and we've come across our newest favourite. Hilarity ensued when we brought Telestrations (USAopoly) to a recent family function. It's the "telephone game sketched out" and was a big hit! For four to eight players, all players simultaneously draw, pass and guess to reveal unpredictable and often ridiculous outcomes.

Check out this short video for a demo on how to play:

It's said to be "even more fun if you can’t draw", and we can certainly vouch for that. Get this game for guaranteed laugh-out-loud fun at your next gathering!

She captured the heart of Prince William and the eyes of the fashion-conscious. "Chic", "elegant" and "trendsetting" are just a few words associated with Kate Middleton's choice of wardrobe. It's no wonder the Duchess of Cambridge was named to this year's Vanity Fair International Best Dressed List.

Here's a fun way to emulate the great Kate's style—by dressing up your nails in CND colours that mimic five of the stylish dresses she wore during the Royals' Tour to Canada in July 2011.

The Help: Kind, smart, important

MOVIE REVIEW
(Release Date: August 10, 2011)
The Help: Kind, smart, important

* * * * *
"You is kind, you is smart, you is important" is a message that the soft-spoken and hard-working black maid Aibileen (Viola Davis) repeatedly instills in two-year-old Mae Mobley, her latest charge in the white family she is tending after. This line perfectly sums up the film as well. Adapted from Kathryn Stockett's New York Times bestselling novel of the same name, the film version has managed to stay true to the book. Indeed, this movie, and the book it originated from, is a kind, smart and important tribute to the civil rights movement.

It's 1962 in Jackson, Mississippi and segregation of whites and blacks is still in effect. A black maid working for a well-to-do white family was the norm, and their "work" included raising the children straight from birth through to their adolescent years.

Emma Stone (Easy A) is Eugenia "Skeeter" Phelan, a Southern belle who's never really felt a part of the high society crowd she was born and raised into. Her single status and aspirations to become a serious journalist are just two of the oddities that make her stand out from her married-with-kids peers. The other two central characters are black maids played magnificently by Davis (Doubt) in the role of quiet and does-as-she's-told Aibileen and Octavia Spencer as the sharp-tongued Minny.

The premise of the film lies in Skeeter’s idea to write a book based on the experiences of the black maids who, for all intents and purposes, raised most of the white children in the community. Aibileen and Minny get on board with Skeeter's project, agreeing to tell their stories anonymously. The risks involved, however, are grave in 1960s Mississippi where speaking on this subject would most certainly mean being imprisoned and perhaps even murdered.

Although Aibileen keeps silent around her employer and her employer's high society friends, she doesn't hold back in recounting her life as a maid to Skeeter. The same goes for Minny, and eventually the other maids find the courage to also tell their stories.

Once the anonymously penned 'The Help' hits the book shelves, we find ourselves cheering as Jackson's upper-crust society is exposed for their nasty and cruel treatment towards the domestic help.

Another notable mention is the performance given by Bryce Dallas Howard (daughter of acclaimed director and former "Happy Days" actor Ron Howard) as Hilly Holbrook, the Southern belle-slash-bigot the audience will love to hate.

The film also has many humorous scenes, many of them involving Sissy Spacek in the role of Mrs. Walters (Hilly's mother), Jessica Chastain as the innocent and likeable beauty Celia Foote who happened to marry rich, and of course, the sassy Spencer in her role as Minny.

Though neither the film nor the book are groundbreaking in their portrayal of the civil rights era, it cannot be denied that this is a story that will touch the hearts and minds of moviegoers.

Check out Kathryn Stockett reading an excerpt from The Help, as well as discussing the book here:

Movie Worth Watching: The Help

We love when books are adapted into films, and we are counting on DreamWorks' version of The Help to be just as riveting as the
#1 New York Times bestselling novel by Kathryn Stockett. Here's a quick synopsis of what the film is about:

The Help
stars Emma Stone (Easy A) as Skeeter, Academy Award–nominated Viola Davis (Doubt) as Aibileen and Octavia Spencer as Minny—three very different, extraordinary women in Mississippi during the 1960s, who build an unlikely friendship around a secret writing project that breaks societal rules and puts them all at risk. From their improbable alliance a remarkable sisterhood emerges, instilling all of them with the courage to transcend the lines that define them, and the realization that sometimes those lines are made to be crossed—even if it means bringing everyone in town face-to-face with the changing times.

Shop the Socially Responsible Way

women-shopping
We think it's a pretty fair stereotype to say most of us career gals love to shop. But it doesn't mean we can't be socially responsible about it. We recently read How to be a Socially Conscious Consumer by Kate Jongbloed, an enlightening post on the Because I am a Girl blog (originally published on July 8, 2011). As Jongbloed states, "much of the food we eat and clothes we wear was grown or produced in developing countries", making us "connected to girls in the developing world through the purchases we make". If this isn't something you think about when you're shopping, perhaps it's time to become more aware of this important global issue. In her post, Jongbloed also offers six simple tips on how to buy goods that are ethically produced and traded.

Deep Sleep Thanks to a Sheep

To keep up with our work and home responsibilities, we working moms need every minute of shut-eye possible. And that can only happen when our little one is comfortably snoozing first. To assist us with this task, we tried out the Cloud B Sleep Sheep, an adorable sound machine that produces four soothing sounds to help baby fall asleep. Choose from a mother’s calming heartbeat, ocean waves, spring showers, or harmonious whale songs, all of which are lulling sounds that will create a tranquil environment for baby to doze off to. This stuffed animal gets our stamp of our approval—don’t be surprised if you’re in baby’s room and wind up falling asleep to the peaceful sounds, too!

Cars 2: Rev up your moviegoing engines

Lightning McQueen and Mater team up again in Cars 2
MOVIE REVIEW
(Release Date: June 24, 2011)
Cars 2: Rev up your moviegoing engines

* * * * *

If your kids loved the first Cars flick, they (and you) are sure to get a kick out of the movie's sequel from Pixar Animation Studios. Owen Wilson and Larry the Cable Guy (or rather, their voices) are back as the race car and tow truck duo Lightning McQueen and Mater respectively.

Like a true action flick, but one that's been made to be kid-friendly, the film takes viewers around the world to exciting destinations like Tokyo, London, Paris and the Italian Riviera and features thrilling chase scenes. It's definitely a movie that will delight your visual senses. Car-lovin' dads will especially appreciate the animated versions of Mini Coopers, Rolls-Royces and Fiats. And all parents can rest assured that the kiddies will leave the theatre having learned a wholesome lesson about loyalty and friendship. This is a movie you'll want to put down as a fun family outing for a rainy day.

Cars 2
is playing at select Empire Theatres locations as well as other theatres across Canada. Click here to go to the official Empire Theatres site to find showtimes and the theatre closest to you.
