Something Borrowed: Something delightfully wonderful

When a chick flick is done right, it is a great escape from reality for a couple hours. And make no mistake
Something Borrowed, a new romantic comedy based on the bestselling Emily Giffin novel of the same name, is time well spent.

Ginnifer Goodwin plays Rachel, a goody-goody, straight and narrow lawyer and Kate Hudson is Darcy, Rachel's longtime best friend who is as free-spirited as she is self-absorbed. After having one too many drinks on her 30th birthday, Rachel winds up having a fling with Dex (Colin Egglesfield) who is not only her crush from her law school days, but also Darcy's fiancé.

Problem is, it's more than just a fling. Turns out Dex was once interested in Rachel too, but the shy and timid Rachel didn't catch on when she had the chance, and thus Darcy swooped in and is now only a few months away from marrying Dex. The film focuses on this love triangle with Dex torn between choosing Darcy or Rachel.

But it's not the main plot that captures our attention the most. What's truly wonderful about the movie are the moments between Rachel and Darcy (the Salt-N-Pepa dance sequence is just the right amount of corniness mixed with cuteness). You get the chance to see how two women who are polar opposites develop and maintain a friendship that has lasted from childhood to adulthood.

Rachel also has her funny wise-cracking guy pal Ethan (John Krasinski) to confide in, and you can bet that Krasinski definitely adds more than his share of comic relief to the film.

Though there are a lot of moral dilemmas to deal with here, what's particularly good about the movie is that it doesn't skirt behind these issues. In fact, it's very clear by the conclusion of the film that there are consequences to a person's actions. No doubt, the film has plenty of laughs, but you'll also be left with thinking twice about how important your friendships truly areand what you would (or wouldn't) do to keep them.

Emily Giffin fans will be happy to know the movie stays fairly true to its literary roots. Look out for a cameo by Giffin sitting on a park bench reading, of all things, Something Blue. Now if that isn't a less-than-subtle hint for the book's sequel to be made, we don't know what it is, but we would certainly be alright with that!
